Techniques covered:

  • Cutting out pattern pieces, noting the markings
  • Making a patch pocket
  • Lining a bag
  • Covering piping cord and inserting piping detail into a bag
  • Zipper detailing, including zipper tabs, zipper facings and inserting a zipper into a lined bag
  • Skill level: Basic sewing machine skills for student’s own sewing machine

The kit will contain: Recycled embroidery, contrast fabric, interfacing fused to pattern pieces ready to be cut out, zipper, thread, piping cord, grosgrain ribbon, & project notes. Supplied in ziplock bag.

This is one of the series of 6 Essential Embroidery skills classes, which comprise the Guildโ€™s foundation Certificate in Embroidery.

Please bring the following items to the class:

  • Working sewing machine with all-purpose foot and zipper foot. Students must be able to operate their machine confidently.
  • Embroidered fabric such as the centre piece of a ‘duchess set’ measuring at least 32 cm x 24 cm (OPTIONAL). See note below.
  • SHARP scissors
  • Pins
  • Seam ripper (unpicker)
  • Hand sewing needles
  • Marker pencil/water erasable pen
  • Tape measure
  • Ruler

Note:ย  Those who do not wish to provide their own embroidered fabric, can purchase a suitable piece for an additional $10. The embroidered fabric supplied will be similar to the photographed example, but there will be a choice of both embroidered fabric and colour of the lining.

The advantage of ordering the complete kit (including fabric) is that the material is fused to an interfacing and the pattern is traced on. This will save time at the beginning of the class.
