Class with Anna Lang
Stumpwork embroidery, as we know it, is predominantly a decorative style of raised embroidery, that employs detached elements which are stitched on a separate piece of fabric. These elements are usually worked around pieces of wire and then are applied to the background embroidery to give a 3 dimensional effect.
In the workshop we will be stitching the raised elements using wire, which will then be incorporated into the prepared background fabric. After the embroidery is complete the piece will be made up into a Christmas decoration.
Please bring the following items to the class:
- 15 cm square of background fabric โ the fabric can be silk, linen or a good quality cotton fabric . Prepare by overlocking the edges
- 15 cm Piece of off-white Lawn or Homespun the same size as the background fabric. Prepare by overlocking the edges
- 18 cm square of cream homespun for the detached leaves
- 10 cm embroidery hoopย – for the main embroidery piece
- 12 cm hoop – for the detached embroidery
- ย A good pair of scissors to cut out Stumpwork petals and leaves. These scissors can also be use to cut the embroidery threads
- An old pair of scissors or small wire cutter for cutting the metal wires
- Packet of size 3 to 9 ย crewel or straw needles
- 1 no 16 or 18 Chenille needle
- 1 beading needle
- Fine 0.5 propelled pencil.
- ย White sewing thread, any type

There are 4 steps at the entrance to the building and the ground floor area, as a result, wheelchair access is difficult and not recommended. Classes are usually held in the upstairs room which can only be accessed via the stairs.
Getting Here
- Free parking is available on Saturday and Sunday in Warry, Kennigo and Love Streets (behind the Guild).
- Fortitude Valley train station is a 5-minute walk away (exit via Brunswick Street).
- Numerous bus routes service Fortitude Valley. The closest stop, adjacent to the Guild building, is Brunswick Street at St Pauls Terrace, stop 5.

The Guild accepts no responsibility for difficulties with, or damage to your equipment.
Cancellation Policy
If a class is cancelled by the Guild all fees paid will be refunded. No refunds will be given for cancellations within two weeks of the class date. If more than two weeksโ notice is given, a refund will be offered, less $20 administration fee. Payment for kits will not be refunded but, if already purchased, the kit can be collected from the Guild rooms.
